Veganisim is in the spotlight this January as record numbers of people change to a plant based diet in Veganuary. It’s popularity has doubled year on year since 2014 and aims to educate people on, and promote, the vegan lifestyle.
So becoming a Vegan… it’s gonna be tough, right!? But wait, hear us out… Oreos, Hobnobs, and even Turkish Delight are Vegan! Vegan cupcakes (especially our Vegan logo cupcakes) are delicious and plenty of sweets are Vegan-friendly. So don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re gonna have to cut out a lot of your favourite things!
What Is A Vegan Diet?
First things first, what is a Vegan diet? Vegans do not eat meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy, or any products that come from animals. Instead, their diets are made up of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds, lentils and soy.
Now Where Do I Start?
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are our top 10 tips to make becoming Vegan a piece of cake.
This site just has to be your starting point! Not only can you get tips, but you can download meal plans and sign up for email support to help you on your journey.
2. Download a Vegan label scanner app
There are some great apps out there, such as “Is It Vegan?” that allow you to change the settings to Vegan, so when you’re in the supermarket a quick scan of a product will let you know if it meets your needs. Perfect!
3. There’s a world of Vegan on your doorstep
There are an estimated 600,000 Vegans in the UK and businesses have really stepped up their offerings. You’re very likely to have a Vegan supermarket, Vegan cafes or restaurant local to you, so it’s worth a quick search. We recommend the Happy Cow App, which pinpoints your nearest restaurants offering great Vegan options. If you can’t be bothered to go in search of food, Ocado have a huge range of Vegan options and they’ll deliver right to your door.
4. Plan your Vegan meals
It might sound like a simple one, but it’s really going to help you keep on track and reduce stress. Rather than trying to come up with different options every day and it feeling time-consuming, sit down one night a week, plan your meals and get in everything you will need. BBC GoodFood is a great source for Vegan recipes.
5. Join a Vegan Facebook group
This is a great way to meet like-minded people, get support and exchange ideas for recipes and meal plans. Vegans United is a great Facebook group to start with.
6. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing!
The point of Veganuary is to educate people on living a vegan lifestyle and the benefits of it… it’s not expected that everyone will go fully Vegan afterwards or even during. If there is something you will really struggle to cut out, that’s okay, maybe leave that in your diet for now, but be Vegan conscious with your other options… Every little helps!
7. Check out Accidentally Vegan UK
There are so many accidentally Vegan products, and some are bound to be among your favourite products, so don’t go thinking you’ll have to cut out all of your favourite things. Accidentally Vegan will let you know which of your favourites can still be eaten!
8. Try the Barnivore App
There are also so many alcoholic drinks you can still have on a Vegan diet; the Barnivore app is perfect for finding out which ones apply.
9. Stay Sweet with Vegan treats
Changing your diet drastically is not going to be easy. You’re going to want to treat yourself occasionally, and you absolutely still can. There are Vegan sweet ranges such as Jamie Laing’s Candy Kittens, Vegan chocolates like Ombar, and the supermarkets offer lots of Vegan-friendly biscuits (including the aforementioned Oreos and hobnobs). Print Cakes offers Vegan logo cupcakes which are delicious (If we do say so ourselves!), meaning your Vegan employees and customers don’t have to miss out on a branded cupcake treat.
10. Don’t be put off
When it comes to Veganism, as with many dietary choices, there can be a bit of a negative reaction to it. This has definitely lessened in recent years as the popularity has increased and people have more understanding. Try not to be put off if this is something you really want to try!
